Sutton Crescent Community Housing

CORT Community Housing, a long-standing client, presented Ministry with a unique brief; to design accommodation for a tenant group which allowed them to feel safe while also allowing active engagement with their community. The resulting urban village seeks to provide purpose-built housing for those who are often most overlooked.

To allow tenants to feel independent and secure each of the 27 one-and two-bedroom apartments are articulated so each unit can be read as an individual dwelling. This is enhanced with amenity planting, permeable fencing, balconies, and sunshades to create styling of the individual units. Communal areas include raised veggie gardens, washing lines and wide walkways. By providing opportunities for increased social engagement these create points of connection fostering a village atmosphere. Then connecting to the public realm, this allows tenants the opportunity to engage with the public world at their own leisure.
